Learning at Home Guidance for Pupils and Parents
(Updated January 2021)
All staff at Castlehead High School hope that you and your families continue to be safe and well during this difficult period. We miss our pupils and colleagues and look forward to when we are learning together in the school building. Until that time, we would like to clarify some important information that will ensure that all pupils can engage with learning activities at home and continue to make progress in their learning.
We recognise the challenging circumstances in which we all find ourselves will at times cause stress and anxiety for pupils and parents. The priority during this time is the health and wellbeing of pupils and their families and completion of schoolwork should not cause additional worries. We have created this guidance to clarify/simplify how pupil work will be issued and how it should be submitted.
In this guidance you will find:
1. Well-being support.
2. A reminder on how to access Glow, SMHW and Microsoft Teams.
3. The quantity and type of learning at home work your child will receive.
4. How to access Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint free at home.
Supporting and promoting wellbeing
During this challenging time, our key priorities are everyone’s health and wellbeing. It is very important that we all take care of our physical and mental health. Keeping yourself active, happy, and ready to return to school when the time comes, is a very important factor.
Simple steps to taking better care of our mental health and wellbeing over the coming weeks include:
We have a range of supports in place to support the mental health and wellbeing of our pupils during the school closure.
Our Home Link team and Inclusion Support Assistant continue to provide targeted support for pupils and families.
Pupil Support teachers can continue to be contacted (by pupils and parents) via email to discuss any concerns:
Mrs Abercrombie:gw07abercrombiemarga@glow.sch.uk
Miss Campbell: gw07campbelljulie@glow.sch.uk
Mrs Duggan: gw07dugganclare@glow.sch.uk
Mrs Stewart: gw11mochanpamela@glow.sch.uk
Ms McFarlane: gw20mcfarlanegemma@glow.sch.uk
Our Support for Learning team are also continuing to provide support to allocated pupils.
Supporting physical wellbein
It is important that everyone, including children and young adults stay physically active during lockdown. This will not only help us to keep physically fit and well but will also have a positive impact on our mental health and wellbeing.
It is recommended that we engage in 30 minutes to an hour of exercise per day. Where possible (and within current guidance) this can be completed outside. This has the health benefits of breathing in fresh air and getting away from the various screens we use in our daily lives. This could be a walk, jog, cycle, scoot, trampoline, or any other cardiovascular exercise, or alternatively a circuit style workout.
To support this, the PE department will be issuing weekly fitness activities and challenges for all pupils. There are also a wide range of resources online to support physical health and wellbeing including:
- PE with Joe Wicks - https://www.youtube.com/user/thebodycoach1
- Darebee daily workout cards - https://darebee.com/workouts.html
2. Accessing Learning at Home Materials
Glow
All pupils have a Glow log in and password in order to access their Glow email, Satchel One (Show My Homework), Teams and Microsoft Office. Pupils can login to Glow at, https://glow.rmunify.com
Pupils experiencing issues with Glow should report this via; http://bit.ly/CHSDIGITALACCESS
To contact the school about matters relating to online learning, please click; http://bit.ly/CHSPARENTALCONTACT
All pupil work will be issued via Satchel One (Show My Homework). Pupils can access this by logging in to their Glow account and adding the Satchel One tile to their Launch Pad or by downloading the app to their tablet or smartphone. Parents can also download the app and gain access using their parent code. Downloading the App will allow you to receive notifications when work is issued.
3. What type of work be issued to my child?
Staff have completed a considerable amount of professional learning and development since the last lockdown in March and are more skilled and knowledgeable about using different methodologies on-line to engage pupils. Staff will aim to ensure that approximately 50% of learning at home materials issued to pupils are ‘interactive’. The learning at home materials provided for each pupil will be proportionate to the number of periods attended in school (i.e. if your child has 3 periods of science on their timetable, they will be issued 3 periods worth of science work to ensure continued progress when learning at home). As a guide interactive lessons could include the following;
To ensure that your child can engage with live lessons and interact with teachers and peers we ask that they follow the structure of period timings of the school day as far as possible.
We are aware that this is a challenging time for everyone. Pupils will need support at home to adapt to the change in learning remotely from home. Additionally, some members of staff are supporting their own children at home in addition to supporting their classes at Castlehead High School and this may impact when they are available on-line.
Submitting Completed Learning at Home Tasks
The majority of completed work will be submitted via Show My Homework or Microsoft Teams. This will be made clear on the task instructions posted on Show My Homework.
Teachers will issue feedback for most tasks through Show My Homework or Microsoft Teams. Some teachers may issue live feedback on Microsoft Teams. The method of feedback will be made clear in the task instructions posted on Show My Homework.
Pupils can interact with their teachers via the Comment option on Show My Homework or chat function on Teams. This may be useful if pupils require clarification of task instructions or if they need support to complete tasks.

- Taking a break- limiting exposure to the news and the use of social media.

- Each week all pupils will be issued a wellbeing activity from their Pupil Support teacher.
- Telephone counselling support is available to all pupils through Exchange counselling. A referral can be made by contacting the appropriate Pupil Support Teacher.
